A small dam project in China that involves the construction of small (sub 15MWh)  hydro generators for feeding electricity into the grid and at the same time reducing emissions. The grid is currently dominated by fossil fuel generation. Financial checks are made to ensure that the project clearly demonstrates 'additionality'. Smaller scale projects are selected that did not have adverse social and environmental impacts that are associated with larger projects. The projects have all been verified by the Voluntary Carbon Standard. 

This small hydro-powered electricity plant is in a rural location in Guatemala, surrounded by villages and hamlets, many of which had no power before the project began. It replaces the use of fossil fuels with a renewable energy source - the natural flow of the river.

A re-forestation programme has also been developed on the land around the riverbed. Red pine trees are being planted, which improves the atmosphere through carbon sequestration.

This project replaces traditional cooking methods (open fires) with solar ovens or energy efficient stoves. Solar ovens use no fuel and are completely powered by the sun, energy efficient stoves require fuel but are approximately 75% more efficient than an open fire. Solar ovens heat up to around 180 degrees celsius and are ideal for sterilizing water as well as cooking. The choice of whether to deploy a solar oven or efficient stove is made by project managers on the ground taking into account the immediate environment and local customs of the receiving family.

In addition to the saving in greenhouse gas emissions, the reduced need for firewood and burning of rubbish, leads to a corresponding reduction in the amount of time spent collecting the material. Users of the new technology benefit from reduced costs and an improved environment
